Can a Kuryakun Hypercharger be made functional on an 1100cc Shadow Spirit?

I have been looking at the Kuryakyn Hypercharger to dress up my '04 1100cc Shadow Spirit. They look great mounted on the bike, but are listed as "cosmetic only" some custom bike sites have mentioned making them 100% functional, but no one ever details how. Are there parts availiable to accomplish this or am I looking at a full, one off custom built piece for this one?|||Yes, in theory they can be made functional. First, let me explain the operation of ram air. Air is forced into the carb inlet, by being scooped in from the atmosphere. This creates a positive pressure in the carb throat. A carb is designed to create a vacuum in the throat,to pull fuel from the bowl, through the various jets. (idle/low speed, intermediate, main, and sometimes an auxilary high speed). Also, the air, being packed into the carb throat defeats this, and the carb/engine shuts down. That is why the Hyper-Charger has the air valve on its intake, to shut the air down when the bike is making power. In theory, and maybe in practice, a Hyper-Charger, sit the air valve open at speed would blow bubbles into the float bowl, and gas tank.

To make this work, you have to run an air line from the from the carb bore, just ahead of the butterfly, to the gas tank and to the carb float bowl vent. This will put the fuel in the tank and in the float bowl at the same pressure as the throttle assembly, and will allow the flow through the venturi to create enough vacuum to lift fuel. You will have to rejet and reset both main and low speed circuits.

This is not a quick, simple process, but does work very well. I have set up several bikes with this process, with excellent results. (Both V-twins and 4 cylinder.) I have a 1990 Kaw ZX11 with a dual ram air and this set-up. stock gearing, will red-line in 6th. At 11.5K red line,.and16.5 mph/1000rpm, you figure. (Few more mods also.

Tomcotexas.|||It looks like after some searching the reason you see only cosmetic not functional is that the way the bike was engineered does not allow for you to use a standard hypercharger kit. That being said, i would say if you want to have one that is functional go for it. There can't be that many folks that have gone through the work of doing that.
